Petaling Jaya : The speed limit for dangerous stretches along federal road will be reduced during the Deepavali and
Hari Rayaholiday periods to curb accidents. Inspector General of Police Tan Sri Musa Hassan said talks were being held with The Road Transport Department
and other agencies on its implementation. We have yet to fix the speed limit or decide on the stretches of road.He said after launching the "SJ Alert", ans SMS
alert service, here, yesterday. He added that announcement would be make a week before Deepavali to coincide with the launch of the two-week
Ops Sikap XI. This was a radical move to deal with the growing number of road accidents during festive seasons each year, he said. "Studies and statistics on previous Ops Sikap showed that most fatal road accidents occured along the federal and
state roads and not on the highways where we concentrate our enforcement. "Thus we are putting more men on the federal and state roads and will work with other government agencies to reduce
the speed limit on these roads," he say said. Currently, the speed limit on federal roads is between 60kph and 90kph, while on state roads, it is between 40kph and
80kph.
